Claire Prentice and Finding Humanity at the Side Show

In this episode of The Colin McEnroe Show on Connecticut Public Radio, Claire Prentice speaks at 33:25 into the program about a man who saved thousands of premature infants over almost forty years by exhibiting them in incubators in a sideshow–the subject of her Kindle Single, Miracle at Coney Island: How a Sideshow Doctor Saved Thousands of Babies and Transformed American Medicine.

Claire’s first book was the award-winning The Lost Tribe of Coney Island: Headhunters, Luna Park, and the Man Who Pulled Off the Spectacle of the Century, which The New Yorker briefly noted illuminates “a moment in American history when imperialist ambitions, racism, and entertainment converged.”

She is working on an Audible Original titled Curse of Riches: Inside the Weird World of the Family Who Owned New York City, about the Wendels, a family that was as wealthy and well-known among the New York aristocracy in their day as their friends the Astors and Vanderbilts, and are all but forgotten today.
